Radio Garden launched in 2016 by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, evolving into a rich digital radio experience with over 40,000 live stations as of 2024. Users can explore this immersive global audio map by rotating a 3D globe and clicking green dots representing cities—instantly tuning into local broadcasts and feeling transported to distant locales.
The size of each green dot reflects the number of available broadcasters in that region. Both the web version and mobile apps (iOS/Android) support background playback and even continue streaming while your phone sleeps. More than just music discovery, Radio Garden opens a window into diverse cultures—news, languages, traditional and contemporary content from around the world.
Its intuitive map-based UI was developed in collaboration with Studio Puckey and Studio Moniker, supports streaming formats like MP3, Ogg, and AAC, and sees regular updates to station listings. Especially during global travel restrictions, Wired praised it as a creative way to “capture the small joys of travel” through sound alone.
